This brooch is inspired by a poem ‘To My Brother’ by Vera Brittain, who served as a nurse in the Voluntary Aid Detachment during the First World War. The poem is an ode to her brother, Edward, who sadly died in 1916 and commemorates his bravery in the Battle of the Somme. In 2016 it was chosen to appear on a Royal Mail stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War.
Your battle-wounds are scars upon my heart,
Received when in that grand and tragic “show”
You played your part
Two years ago,
And silver in the summer morning sun
I see the symbol of your courage glow—
That Cross you won
Two years ago.
Though now again you watch the shrapnel fly,
And hear the guns that daily louder grow,
As in July
Two years ago,
May you endure to lead the Last Advance
And with your men pursue the flying foe
As once in France
Two years ago.
All profits from the Summer Morning Sun Silver Poppy Brooch will go towards the Royal British Legion's work in supporting the Armed Forces community.
